A floating dock is in general appearance something like a huge box, without ends or top. The bottom consists of a tank or pontoon; by filling this with water the deck is sunk sufficiently to allow the ship which requires docking to be floated in. The water is then pumped out from the bottom by means of powerful machinery, the dock rising until the ship is clear of the water. Around 1915, some of these docks will raise a ship of 36,000 tons.
