The cinematograph is really a development of the zoetrope or "the wheel of life" In 1877 Edward Muybridge obtained successive pictures of a running horse by means of a row of cameras, but the first practical moving picture apparatus was invented by Edison in 1890. In 1892 he brought out the Kinetoscope, a combination of photography and electricity by means of which the voice of a phoongraph works synchronously with the actions of the figures projected on the screen.
