The Japanese Doctor
A trade card for a European food product as part of series displaying scenes from around the world. This scene is of a Japanese physician walking to the homes of the sick. He is accompanied by an assistant to carry his medicines and his is dressed in fancy clothing according to his status. However, he is not authorized by the Emperor to carry the swords of a Samaurai, so he carries what is known as a doctor's sword. It is a wood copy of a real sword so in the daytime people will know his occupation and, at night, he will not be harassed by thugs or bandits.
