Folies-Bergere: Le Miroir Pantomime
Known as the father of the modern poster, Jules Chéret (1836 – 1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. In this charming poster for a musical pantomime at the Folies-Bergere, Cheret shows actress Rene Maizeroy in Dutch costume, complete with wooden shoes, cavorting alongside the sea. Her companion, lightly sketched Pierrot, holds up the mirror mentioned in the entertainment's title.
