This animated portrait and its pendant, Portrait of a Man Rising from His Chair (Taft Museum, Cincinnati), are among Rembrandt's most inventive compositions of the early 1630s. Another example, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp (Mauritshuis, The Hague), includes figures in nearly the same poses as this vivacious young woman and her excitable husband. Rembrandt's early experience as a painter of dramatic history scenes and his close study of physiognomy and character during the Leiden period (ca. 1625–31) prepared him to be the most original and successful portraitist in Amsterdam after his arrival there in the winter of 1631–32.
